In the last two posts, we've written about walking trails in the Greensboro and Winston-Salem areas of the Piedmont Triad. It's time now to turn our attention to what we know about pleasant walks in High Point. First off, if you’re looking for nice walks in High Point, TrailLink has a nice overview and tells you what kind of trail, how long it is, and provides trail maps to many of the trails. Here are a few details about some of our favorite spots to walk in High Point—please comment below to let us know about any great hikes or saunters you know about that we haven't mentioned.
Bicentennial Greenway and Southwest High Point Greenway
The Piedmont Triad’s greenway system connects High Point and Greensboro via the Bicentennial Greenway, which has nearly 20 miles of trails – a mix of asphalt and gravel. Walkers and cyclists in High Point can access the Bicentennial Greenway at the Piedmont Environmental Center and Gibson Park (see below), as well as other spots. In High Point, the relatively new Southwest High Point Greenway has six miles of paved trails running from the High Point Amtrak station to Harvell Park and beyond.
Piedmont Environmental Center
I love the Piedmont Environmental Center off of Penny Road, where you can take part in eco-tours, guided nature hikes, and other environmental education – or just explore the 8 miles of trails and access to the Bicentennial Greenway on your own. Everyone loves the North Carolina Mapscape there – a 70’ x 30’ walk-on topographic map of our state!
Gibson Park
Gibson Park—a 200-acre county park in Jamestown—has soccer and baseball fields, the historic circa 1800 Deep River Cabin, picnic shelters, and short walkable trails that connect with the Bicentennial Greenway.
Oak Hollow Festival Park
Festival Park is located next to Oak Hollow Lake Dam in the 1,500-acre Oak Hollow Park complex. You can walk around and enjoy scenic overlooks, but seasoned hikers probably won’t find it much of a challenge. Plan on a sedate walk, pack a picnic if the weather’s nice, and hang out to watch the sailboats, speed boats, and fireworks at various events and celebrations throughout the year.
