Benjamin Moore's 2017 Color Trends
There’s no question that a freshly painted, tastefully decorated, clutter-free home will almost always sell faster than one that’s over-furnished, filled with knick-knacks and out-of-date. Some real estate professionals will tell you that neutrals are the way to go, but there’s no need to repaint your whole interior white if you want to sell your home. In our experience, here’s what matters:
- Are your home’s rooms painted neatly? Are holes in the walls from picture hooks, etc., patched and invisible? Are ceiling and trim edges crisp and drip/smear-free?
- Are the rooms painted in colors that suit contemporary tastes? An easy way to tell is by looking at catalogs or websites for stores like Pottery Barn, Rooms to Go, or Wayfair. Out-of-date colors can say “1970” or “1982” quickly!
- Do your home’s paint colors complement its architecture and any furnishings and décor items you have? A bright-yellow wall might work just right in a contemporary home, but seem garish and out of place in a classic Federal style home

Every year, paint manufacturers and others in the design world issue their color forecasts. For 2017, it looks like most colors that are “hot” are sophisticated, dusky hues in natural tones—rich, deep greys; dark, lush purples; and all shades of green.

Famous color systems company Pantone says the 2017 color of the year is Greenery (15-0343), “nature’s neutral,” and the spring top 10 colors are described as “a mixture of vitality, relaxation, and the great outdoors.”

Farrow & Ball, well-regarded British paint and wallpaper manufacturer specializing in historic color palettes, picks four key colors each year. This year’s choices are radicchio, studio green, hay, and the unpigmented “all white.” In fact, they say an all-white interior is still a great, fashionable choice – and they recommend layering subtly different whites.

Color names hint at their depth and the influence of nature on the palette: salamander (2050-10), sea life (2118-40), shadow (2117-30), night shade (2116-10), and ebony king (2132-20) are just a few.

Behr, a popular paint with DIYers sold at Home Depot, issued a 2017 color collection in three palettes: Comfortable, Composed, and Confident. Similar to Benjamin Moore’s palette, these feature softened deep colors like Midnight Show (T17-17), Shades On (T17-10), and Artful Magenta (T17-14). Greens are well represented, too, from Jade Dragon (T17-15) and Polished Aqua (T17-08) to In the Woods (T17-13) and Balanced (T17-07).
