Walking Trails in the Piedmont Triad: Greensboro

In Destinations, Triad Life

Hiking in North CarolinaNow that the weather is cooling off a bit, we've been trying to get outside as much as possible to enjoy the autumn leaves and fresh air. I just learned about a cool online application that shows every walking trail and greenway in Greensboro—more than 90 miles of great places to walk, run, hike, and bike.  You can find it here at Greensboro Trails.

Some of my family's favorites are:

The Greensboro Arboretum

Greensboro Arboretum is a 17-acre park run by Greensboro Beautiful right off of Market Street at 401 Ashland Dr. It has a lovely collection of labeled plants and trees, as well as an educational facility, a playground, baseball field, and many outdoor sculptures. You can walk around the park on its Woodland Trail, which is 1.3 miles (but has side trails to explore, too). This is a great place for a family walk, picnic, or a stroll with a date.

Tanger Family Bicentennial Garden

Also a Greensboro Beautiful endeavor, the Bicentennial Garden at 1105 Hobbs Road near Friendly Center is a 7.5-acre oasis known for its massive annual plantings and bronze sculptures. It's a popular spot for weddings, family photo sessions, community festivals, and peaceful walks on its shady trails. The Bicentennial Garden is adjacent to the city's David and Rachel Caldwell Historical Center and right across the street from the Bog Garden at Benjamin Park, which features an elevated boardwalk winding through shady natural wetlands….you’ll enjoy that, too.)

Bur Mil Park

Bur-Mil is a regular destination for locals, because its 250 acres next to Lake Brandt have so much to attract us. From its lighted driving range and par 3 golf course to fabulous pool, multiple playgrounds, and quaint Nature Center, there’s a lot of semi-structured fun to have. But if you’re in the mood for a quiet hike, a more aggressive hike, or a mountain bike excursion, Bur-Mil is THE place. On-site trails include the 4.34-mile Owl’s Roost Trail, the 2.06-mile Big Loop Trail, and the 0.8-mile Little Loop Trail – plus you can access the Atlantic-Yadkin Greenway that leads all the way to the Guilford Courthouse Military Park.

Country Park and Guilford Courthouse National Military Park

Yes, Country Park and Guilford Courthouse National Military Park are two separate parks—one a city park, and one a national park. However, they’re linked together about midway through each, so if you’re looking to extend your walk, jog, or bike, there’s a total of about 6 miles of paved road in mostly shaded terrain to explore. If you like history, you’ll really enjoy the side trails (not all paved) and Visitor Center at Guilford Courthouse National Military Park. And from Country Park, you can easily access the Greensboro Science Center, “the Zone” BMX jump course, and the Spencer Love Tennis Center.

Hagan-Stone Park

A little further afield is the 409-acre Hagan-Stone Park, which is technically in Pleasant Garden, just a hop, skip, and jump southeast from Greensboro. This is a large complex where folks RV, camp, and fish—there are four lakes and ponds within the park. Plus, it has about 9 miles of unpaved trails that hikers, runners, and bicyclists love. This one is worth a little drive to get to!

Where are some of your favorite places to get outdoors and take a hike (or saunter, or dash, or bike!)? These are just a few of our family's favorites - comment to let us know where else we should explore!
