Last week, we went out for a much needed “date night” – it’s definitely been one of our busiest seasons in real estate here in the Piedmont Triad of NC! I have to tell you about this fantastic restaurant that’s a bit of a hidden gem: Reel Seafood, which a fantastic seafood restaurant in the shopping center at 2002 New Garden Road in Greensboro. I say hidden because it’s tucked back from the road—the only way most people know it’s there is the REEL sign hooked up to a fence facing New Garden. I say gem because each time I’ve been there, the food was great and the atmosphere was relaxing.

After we enjoyed our meal so much, I looked into Reel Seafood’s history. Some of you who have been in Greensboro for a good long time will remember Bert’s Seafood, a perennial favorite that used to be on Spring Garden Street, then moved to Market Street before closing its doors. Well, Reel’s partners include Brad Hendrix, who used to be the executive chef of Bert’s, and Drew Lackland, a former Bert’s partner (plus Steven Stern, 20+ year veteran of Ham’s restaurants). No wonder it’s so good!

Everything I’ve ever had at Reel Seafood was fresh and delicious, from traditional seafood dishes like trout amandine to more adventurous options like char-grilled oysters topped with chipotle, brown sugar, and bourbon butter. Check out Reel's Facebook page for current menus and specials.  Last week, I enjoyed the “potato encrusted NC black grouper topped with blue cheese remoulade” along with fresh grilled vegetables, while my wife absolutely loved the “fresh Alaskan halibut, grilled and served ‘picatta style’” along with a Southwestern corn salad. On another visit, I tried the grilled shrimp tacos, which were as good as any I’ve had from a Mexican food truck, and any time red snapper or salmon are on the menu, it’s a must-order.

Weather permitting, it’s a treat to sit on the restaurant’s small patio, which I believe is shady for much of the day. If you must eat indoors, the atmosphere is bustling and simple—not too fancy for jeans or shorts, but nice enough for a dressy night out. If you enjoy a good glass of wine or beer, you can find a good selection at Reel's bar, along with mixed drinks like summery mojtos or classic martinis. And desserts like key lime pie top off the meal in true coastal style!

Every item on the daily menu of seafood is wild-caught or sourced from aquaculture farms. When we were there, I noticed that the raw bar featured farmed oysters from Duxbury, MA; Beaufort, SC; and Neguac Bay, New Brunswick; and wild-harvested oysters from Topsail Island, NC. If you're not a seafood lover, you can still enjoy a good meal at Reel - the menu typically includes items like prime rib and a hearty burger, as well as vegetarian-friendly options. Though I haven't taken advantage of it, I understand that Reel's chef is flexible about adjusting menu items to accommodate allergies or special requests.

All in all, two thumbs up from us on Reel Seafood!  Give it a try next time you've got the itch to go to the coast but not the vacation time to drive to the beach! If you have an opinion about this restaurant, another recommendation for excellent food in Greensboro, Winston-Salem, High Point, or any point in between, get in touch.
