In Destinations, Triad Life

Melt Kitchen & Bar has been around on Golden Gate Boulevard in Greensboro for a few years, and I've heard it's good...but never managed to get there to eat. Greensboro isn't that large of a city, but somehow a few miles can sometimes seem like 100.  So I was so excited to see that Melt has opened a second location on New Garden Road, which is closer to my neck of the woods. I met a friend for lunch last week at Melt, and now I wonder why I didn't ever make the drive over to Golden Gate Boulevard! There's just no excuse for lazy, is there? In brief: Our lunch at the new Melt location was scrumptious. I hope this place has great success in this location.Melt Kitchen & Bar Greensboro NC

Melt Kitchen & Bar Occupies Former Pieworks Location

Melt renovated the spot formerly occupied by Pieworks, which had been a Greensboro mainstay. We were disappointed that Pieworks closed, but glad to see another good restaurant commit to opening in the same shopping center as Imperial Koi (also delicious), Gia: Drink. Eat. Listen. (fun place to hang out), and Nan's School of Dance/Mike Carr Karate, among others. With Reel Seafood Grill in the shopping center across New Garden, this area now has some great dining out options.

When my friend and I arrived at Melt, it looked busy, so I was concerned about a wait, especially since there didn't seem to be much of a waiting area. However, the lunch crowd moved pretty quickly and we were seated within 10 minutes of our arrival. I'd describe the ambiance as hip casual - it's a relatively small restaurant with an attractive small bar area. I'd feel just as comfortable grabbing a quick bite here after a workout at Gold's Gym nearby as I would meeting up with friends for dinner and drinks on a weekend.

Small, But Creative Menu

The menu isn't huge, but what they offer is consistently unique and seems to be thoughtfully and carefully prepared. Reviews on various sites rave about the Duck Fat Fries (served with dipping sauces including ketchup, creamy herb, pesto aioli, Russian, and maple Dijon) and Crispy Brussels sprouts (served with bacon, fried capers, dried cherries and pistachio vinaigrette). Neither my friend or I opted for an appetizer at lunchtime, but what we had did not disappoint:

  • The Sunrise Kale Salad--featuring baby kale, mixed greens, artichoke hearts, marinated portabella mushrooms, roasted red peppers, crispy bacon, and parmesan, topped with a sunny-side-up egg and lemon basil vinaigrette--was my choice, and it was a delightful mix of flavors and textures.
  • The Duck Club--a panini of duck confit, crispy prosciutto, gouda, caramelized onions, and arugula with apricot thyme jam--was my friend's choice, and the panini was not only delicious but big enough for two meals. She had a side salad to accompany her panini, and she nearly licked the plate clean!

We both enjoyed a refreshing glass of Chardonnay with our meals. Melt's wine and craft beer list, like its menu, is relatively brief but interesting and not too run-of-the-mill.

I'll definitely be going back for another meal now. Shall I choose the Melt's Lamb Burger with fontina, mixed greens, cucumber, red onion, and feta oregano aioli? Or The Granny Panini - roasted turkey, Granny Smith apples, brie, bacon-onion jam, and arugula? Or maybe the Roasted Beet Salad with goat cheese, spiced walnuts, and red onion with orange sesame vinaigrette?  In any case, next time I'll definitely try the Duck Fat Fries. My heart and waistline may not thank me, but my taste buds will!

I'd say prices are reasonable for unique food - with salads ranging from $9 - 12 and paninis and burgers in the $9 - 14 range. Portion sizes are ample to large. And if you've got young, pickier diners with you, rest assured they'll be happy with Melt's house-made chicken tenders or grilled American cheese sandwich...perhaps with an order of French Quarter Beignets for a treat afterward?
