If you haven’t been to see the (newly renamed) Greensboro Science Center on Lawndale Avenue in Greensboro recently, it’s well worth the price of admission*. You could easily spend the better part of a day there, especially if the weather is good and you can explore the “zoo” portion fully. Now that it’s cooling off, take a picnic and make a day of it!
Of course, the new SciQuarium addition has made the news quite a bit since it opened this summer, but Greensboro Science Center staff have been making changes to update the existing exhibits and add new attractions, making for a lot of opportunities for family entertainment and learning:
- In the “old” museum building, you’ll find: dinosaur models, fossils, and the Kids Alley for children 5 and under, which have always been popular; the Herpetarium and Herpetology Lab; and the Aquatic Discovery area; as well as relatively new exhibits on the human body’s systems and extreme weather. The Collector’s Corner is kind of a cool look at unique specimens that are not usually on display.
- In the outdoor zoo portion of the Greensboro Science Center, there’s a lot to see: Discovery House, where you can touch friendly small mammals and reptiles; crocodiles, wallabys, tigers, red wolves, and other cool animals and birds; the Friendly Farm petting zoo; and the always-popular and personable gibbons, who recently had a baby!
- The new SciQuarium is really cool: You can see a fishing cat, penguins, sharks, otters, and other water animals up-close in this brand-new aquarium space. You can learn a lot about these animals, but also about the inner workings of an aquarium. The Science Center has done a great job with this new attraction, and you’ll really enjoy it!
In addition, you can still watch special movies and laser shows at the Time Warner Cable Omnisphere Theater and planetarium. If you haven't been to the Greensboro Science Center--or haven't been lately--we highly recommend that you check it out!
