A couple of our neighbors just told me about attending a creative "upcycled book making" workshop for adults at the GreenHill Center for NC Art at the Greensboro Cultural Center on Davie Street downtown this past Thursday evening. GreenHill is composed of four spaces: ArtQuest Studios, The Gallery, InFocus Gallery, and The Shop. It is “the only non-collecting organization dedicated to presenting, promoting, and advocating contemporary visual art and artists of NC.” The gallery has a well-curated calendar of exhibits each year – and the gallery spaces and gift shop definitely are worth the trip downtown.
If you’re like me, you’ve heard of GreenHill or its ArtQuest Studios interactive space for kids. My daughter and son loved ArtQuest when they were younger. But if you’re like me, you didn’t know that the gallery hosts workshops and other programs for adults, too – consider yourself “in the know” now! Here’s a little bit more info about just a few of the variety of things you and your family can do at GreenHill, starting with the workshops for adults.

GreenHill’s Workshops for Adults
Last fall, GreenHill held workshops on clay rattle making, paper making, and “painting without a paintbrush,” and this year, the schedule includes upcycled book making and plaster cast-making with natural objects, among others. Classes are typically offered in afternoon and evening sessions led by GreenHill facilitators and/or artists. The programming ties to exhibits that are on display in the gallery space, so part of each class involves a guided exploration of the gallery for inspiration. My neighbors said this was a great way to see the exhibit, learn about an art form, and try something new.
Free Family Nights on Wednesdays from 5 - 7 p.m.
ArtQuest Studios is a fun place for kids and their families
Just about every young family should experience ArtQuest Studios at GreenHill – they are interactive, inviting spaces where kids and their parents can try their hand at everything from painting to hand-building clay objects and more. ArtQuest admission usually costs around $10 per person, so an opportunity to try it out for free is a must-do.
(If you decide your family will enjoy ArtQuest more than once a year, you love to see current art exhibitions, and you want to feel more knowledgeable about the cultural life of the area, a GreenHill membership is well worth the $65. It pays for itself in a visit or two!)
Young Artists Kollective (YAK)
YAK is designed for kindergarteners through sixth graders – it’s an educational program where children “problem solve, use exciting new art materials, look at and learn about NC art and artists, and meet fellow artists.” Each four-session semester focuses on a theme, such as “the intersection of art and science.”
